What our speakers are saying about SURRENDER:14 Adelaide

Surrender Australia

With less than 2 weeks to go to SURRENDER:14 Adelaide we asked our speakers to consider what our conference theme, Walk Alongside, means to them. Here's what some of them had to say...

  • "If 200 gather at this event then that’s potentially 200 coming alongside 200 after the event. That’s a everyone-for-someone deal. You can’t beat that. This has to be the best thing in Adelaide, eh?" - MICK DUNCAN
  • "As my heart begins to think about SURRENDER and walking alongside others, I realise we are joining in on a tremendously vulnerable and fragile task. The Spirit leads us in vulnerability, not coercion, inviting us deeper and deeper into relationships with others and ourselves. It calls us into ourselves, as Paul exhorts Timothy (1 Tim 4:16) to pay close attention to yourself - to tend our wounds, to be aware of them. It invites us into connections with others (Luke 4:18-19), this is nothing if not a call to relationship." - JON OWEN. Read more from Jon here

If you want to be part of this 'everyone-for-someone deal' and join us in the 'call to relationship', register for SURRENDER:14 Adelaide today.

SURRENDER on the road!

Surrender Australia

SURRENDER Adelaide is back for another year! This year we'll be exploring Jesus' call to walk alongside those who walk alone.

It’s about empowering everyday God-hearted people in our churches to take up the challenge and walk alongside the broken and vulnerable in your existing sphere of influence. It's about building trust and making a difference, and the question is, how can I respond personally? Who can I walk alongside in my community?

Walk Alongside explores the dire need in our churches and communities for Christ-centred believers to engage beyond comfortable and safe friendships, and to pursue a more purposeful and compassionate kind of hospitality with those who struggle, are different or in some way socially isolated.

Guest speakers include Mick DuncanArda Aghazarian and Jon Owen. PLUS there will be poetry from Joel McKerrow. Awesome!

Reflections from SURRENDER:14

Surrender Australia

What an incredible weekend we had at SURRENDER:14! Thanks to everyone who came and shared in Bible studies, workshops, worship and conversations around the fire. Lots of you have been reflecting this week about how SURRENDER:14 has impacted your faith journey, and we are thrilled with your responses so far. It is beautiful when someone writes, 'I finally feel like I have a home and place in the Christian community'.

Whether you came for a day, evening session or the whole conference, we would love your feedback! You can help us make SURRENDER:15 even better by taking a couple of minutes to give us your thoughts, and every survey goes into the draw to win a weekend pass to next year's conference! Click here to take the SURRENDER:14 survey. It will remain open for just one week, so get your responses in by Friday 28 March!

Here are some more reflections...

'This week I have been reminded that Jesus is written on everyone's heart and I am challenged to be intentional about seeing Jesus in others and to join in this work that is already happening!'

'SURRENDER has shaken up the way I walk my Christian journey and how I need to pray for God to teach me his love for the unseen and unlovely.'

'Thanks for connecting me with people passionate about the same ideas and mission as me!'

'I love the diversity [and] the casual, accessible atmosphere... SURRENDER has raised lots of questions for me - good ones!'

The Walk Alongside Bible Study is here!

SURRENDER friend and speaker Mick Duncan has created an awesome Bible study series for your youth group to start thinking about what it means to walk alongside those who walk alone. Mick is from an organisation called Alongsiders NZ, where he has spent years being a friend and mentor to vulnerable, needy and bypassed people.

He's put together a four-week series so you can explore what it's like to be active in following Jesus' to the margins. Jesus modelled a way for us to share life with outcasts and broken people, and it's this example that we aim to embody at SURRENDER:14 and beyond.

It's a great taster for what's to come at the conference next weekend, and a great way to continue the conversation in the weeks following.

More about our theme, Walk Alongside...

Surrender Australia

Rather than leaving it to the social workers and psychologists and other professionals to help the needy and broken, being an ‘Alongsider’, a term coined by our good friend, Mick Duncan, urges a street level revolution in which Christians take the radical step of engaging with strangers, empathising with their pain and connecting with them in their need.

Walking Alongside is an idea that challenges Christian clichés and compartmentalised thinking about people and their circumstance and shallow notions of relationship beyond the initial hug, backslap or handshake at the church door.

It explores the dire need in our churches and communities for Christ-centred believers to engage beyond comfortable and safe friendships and explore a more purposeful and compassionate kind of hospitality with those who struggle, are different or in some way social isolated.

Walking Alongside is about a challenge to step into the gap without any overt agenda other than doing the right thing. It takes practical Christianity to cafes and public places where time, commitment and active listening create an environment where the broken and misunderstood can share their stories without fear of judgement.

Being an Alongsider is different to friendship, counselling, social work or street witnessing, although it may eventually provide an on-ramp for those who decide they too want to walk toward the Christian path. A great way to go deeper as an Alongsider is to get hold of a copy of Mick’s new book, Alongsiders: Sitting with those who sit alone. Visit the SURRENDER:14 bookstall to get your copy, order one from your local bookstore or UNOH Publishing and don’t miss the book launch with Mick, Friday 6pm in the S14 Theatre!
